Updated: Jan 8, 2023

Do you have pain with chewing, swallowing, or speaking? Or limitations opening your mouth? Do you hear clicking, popping, and cracking when you eat or talk? Do you have pain in the neck, scalp, and shoulders? Do you have ringing, or itchiness in the ears?

TMJ or TMJ Dysfunction can be caused by numerous factors, including misalignment of the jaw, dental work, surgery, arthritis, bruxism (grinding), jaw clenching, stress, sinus or ear infections, neck misalignment, inflammation, whiplash, trauma, or other local injury in the cervical area.

Back in 1981, a dentistry study found that the teeth-clenching and grinding which often leads to TMD reduced when the masseter facial muscles were massaged. Symptoms can include jaw pain or clicking or popping in or around the joint, headaches, toothaches, earaches or tinnitus, dizziness, nausea, sinus pressure or pain, clenching, reduced ability to open or close the mouth, or pain when biting or chewing, as well as neck, shoulder or back pain.

What Happens During a TMJ Massage?

When you get a TMJ massage, we begin by releasing the intraoral muscles. We will also work through your neck, chest, collarbone, upper back and shoulders. to release tension in all the areas that are connected to your temporomandibular joint.

How Can a TMJ Massage Help?

Massage therapy can help to relieve the muscle tension and relax the muscles by working trigger point areas and restrictions around the jaw, head and neck. This massage will focus toward the reduction of tension in the masticatory muscles, releasing tension in the fascia, and elimination of trigger points.
